In the beginning ~~~
Boomer Baptist Church
Several years before and up to the year 1904, the Baptists
met in a one-room school house on the hill back of where the Methodist
Church is now located on Route 60 in Boomer. Baptist and Methodists
worshiped on alternate Sundays. A three-week revival meeting in 1904 with
Rev. Moore doing the preaching and Jewel R. Garnett leading the singing
resulted in twenty-two conversions. Following this meeting, the Boomer
Baptist Church was organized.
In the year 1904 the Boomer Coal & Coke Company donated enough lumber
to build a building for worship which was called Boomer Union Church. This
building was built under the supervision of Tom Nutter.
Rev. Moore served as Pastor for about eighteen months after which “Uncle
Ned” Jackson served as Pastor for about two years. Several lay preachers
led the services after Rev. Jackson left until 1910, when Rev. B. F.
Howell was called as Pastor. Rev. Howell served until 1935, when he
retired. During the next two years, the Church was served by Rev. L. L.
Milam as assistant to Rev. W. B. Miller of Charleston. Rev. Milam was
ordained in 1937, and assumed full duties of a Pastor. It was during Rev.
Milam’s ministry in 1940, that the Church realized the need of an
individual Church building so the Boomer Baptist Church launched its first
expansion program purchasing the present property from Mr. Park Stone.
This resulted in the partial construction of the auditorium building. Mr.
Coleman, a Union Carbide engineer, drew plans and supervised building
Boomer Baptist Church. Only the basement section was completed. This much
of the building had to suffice during and after World War 11 due mostly to
restrictions on building materials.
Rev. Milam was succeeded in 1944 by Rev. L. Bruce Cooper under whose
ministry the erection of the present sanctuary progressed to the extent of
the completion of masonry roof, and part of the framing. The building was
completed in early 1949 under the ministry of Rev. John Anthony who
succeeded Rev. Cooper in 1948. Rev. Anthony served the Church until 1953,
when Rev. Harry Stevens became Pastor. It was under Rev. Stevens’
leadership that the present educational building was built.
Rev. Bill Tate became Pastor in December, 1957, and it was during his
ministry that the Church outgrew itself, and the Church decided to
renovate and build again by launching, by faith, a $150,000.00 bond
program, whereby the present building was built.
